Jamie Higley

Muhammed received revelation for the Qur'an and imposed its doctrines first upon the people of Medina. As his preaching spread, so too did the opposition from Mecca, the influential state led by pagan leaders and secular scholars. Wars ensued, and what was once a religion of regional civil dispute has indeed become a religion granting leeway for interpretation of non-Muslims from a worldwide perspective. As a response to violence and unrest targeted towards their desire to worship Allah, they too responded with violence--backed by reason from the holy book itself. I believe that remarks insinuating violence and hatred towards non-believers was first manifested to create a free Muslim nation within the Middle Eastern realm, most especially, in Saudi Arabia.

In today's world, we see more extremists and fundamentalists in the Middle East purport to be representatives of the largest religious group in the world, when they are not. They speak outside Mosques and hold up the book in support of a movement that should be totally unaffiliated, whatsoever, with the original religious society that prevailed once in the Middle East.

So what am I saying? I believe Islam is unique in its own way. It at one time, justified a violent culture that senselessly fought for its survival but for power. But only if at this time in history, over 2000 years ago, was the Qur'an abjecting the Muslim state to violence, then I cannot so readily accept that Islam is such a religion of hate, but a religion with distorted values, and only then, based on the past. If however, real members of the Muslim community are to say that American infidels are to be slaughtered "like dogs" today, based on the teachings of the Qur'an, then it is indeed a religion of hate.

I know plenty of peaceful, friendly people who belong to this religion. They assure that war is not their path, people are not to be used as end-means, and call themselves Americans. I accept that they are members of a religion of peace. I accept that they live virtuously within boundaries of their religion.

But I do believe that the religion of Islam is a troubled one, filled with a great deal of disturbing unrest. Public effort and real leaders of the Muslim community need to reach out and defend their religion against power hungry, so-called, "jihads". And I most certainly will affirm that these people, are indeed a people of hate.
