Called "Stinky" by his classmates, he wore dirty rags and ate out of garbage cans after being abandoned by his father, but without friends or family won entrance into and academic honors at one of the world's greatest universities.

After being graduated from Stanford, he spent twenty years as a highly successful advertising, marketing, and public relations practitioner before returning to academia to earn his PhD in English literature from the University of Louisiana. Former chairman of humanities and English at the University of Charleston, he is the author of countless academic articles, a dozen books, and an award winning screenplay.

He views himself as the Robert Fulton of education. Like the inventor of the first practical steamship, he proposes to synthesize existing technology into a synergistic whole: a powerful technology-based teaching, learning, and producing system devoted to discovering, sharing, and using the power of ideas and ideals. The primary purpose of the new model school is to provide universal access to all learning.
